John Weinzweig

John Jacob Weinzweig, OC, O.Ont ( born March 11, 1913 in Toronto, Ontario; † August 24, 2006 in Toronto, Ontario) was a Canadian composer.

Weinzweig studied from 1934 at the University of Toronto at Healey Willan, Leo Smith and Sir Ernest MacMillan and from 1937 to 1938 at the Eastman School in Rochester with Bernard Rogers. From 1939 to 1978 he taught at the Conservatory of Toronto. He founded in 1934 the Symphony Orchestra of the University of Toronto in 1951 and was one of the founders of the Canadian League of Composers.

He composed ballets and other musical stage works, a symphony, a symphonic ode, an orchestral rhapsody, a violin, a piano and a harp concerto, chamber music, piano and choral music, songs and numerous films and radio plays.
