John Whitgift

John Whitgift (* 1530-1533 in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, † February 29, 1604 in Lambeth ) was Archbishop of Canterbury.

Whitgift studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, and was for a time as a professor working there. In 1571 he was appointed Dean of Lincoln in 1577 and Bishop of Worcester. In 1583, he was named Elizabeth I. Archbishop of Canterbury.

Whitgift was a supporter of Calvinism and found the emerging Puritan writings heretical for the Church of England.
