John Williams (actor)

John Williams ( born April 15, 1903 in Chalfont, Buckinghamshire, England; † 5 May 1983; La Jolla, California, United States of an aneurysm ) was an English actor.

Life and work

From 1930 to 1978 Williams appeared in a total of nearly 40 films and over 40 television shows. Outside of his film career, he earned a reputation as a star television commercials for classical music. It was the spot shown on the longest in the American television history.

Williams received the 1953 Tony Award as Best Supporting Actor ( Best Supporting Actor or Featured ( Dramatic )) for the Broadway production of Dial M For Murder ( Dial M for Murder ), in which he assumed the role of Chief Inspector Hubbard. This part, he also took over in 1954 in the eponymous film adaptation of the play by Alfred Hitchcock. The film was the only Hitchcock film in 3D. The handicapped Williams also played in several episodes of the TV series " Alfred Hitchcock presents" with, as in the episodes Back for Christmas ( Custom built, 1956), Whodunit (1956 ), Wet Saturday ( Nasser Saturday, 1956 ) and Banquo 's Chair (1959 ).

One of his last performances was at Williams Inspector Columbo (Peter Falk ) in " Columbo - Age does not protect against folly " (1972).
