John Williams (Continental Congress)

John Williams ( * March 14, 1731 in Hanover County, Virginia; † October 10, 1799 in Montpelier, North Carolina ) was an American politician and a signer of the Articles of Confederation. He founded the city Williamsboro in North Carolina on the land that he makes available. He was also one of the founders of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Williams moved in 1745 to North Carolina. He later decided to pursue a political career. He was a 1775 Delegate to the Provincial Congress of North Carolina. Then he was from 1777 to 1778 a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina, and from 1778 to 1779 delegate to the Continental Congress for North Carolina. Subsequently, he was from 1779 until his death in 1799, Associate Justice on the North Carolina State Supreme Court After his death he was buried in the family cemetery at Montpelier.

Family

Williams' eponymous cousin John was also politically active and an officer in the Continental Army. He was also removed with Christopher Harris Williams, Congressman for Tennessee, and John Sharp Williams, U.S. Senator from Tennessee used.
