John Winans

John Winans ( born September 27, 1831 in Vernon, Sussex County, New Jersey; † January 17, 1907 in Janesville, Wisconsin ) was an American politician. Between 1883 and 1885 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

After studying law and its made ​​in 1855 admitted to the bar John Winans began to work in his new profession from 1857 in Janesville. There he hit as a member of the Democratic Party also a political career. In 1861 he was elected to the municipal council of Janesville. Between 1865 and 1875 he was a legal representative of his new hometown. Between 1874 and 1891 he was elected four times in the Wisconsin State Assembly. In 1864 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, was nominated for the George B. McClellan as a presidential candidate. From 1874 to 1875 Winans worked on the staff of Governor William R. Taylor.

Between 1885 and 1887 John Winans served as mayor of Janesville. In the congressional elections of 1882 he was the first electoral district of Wisconsin in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Charles G. Williams on March 4, 1883. Since he resigned in 1884 to run again, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1885. After his retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives John Winans again worked as a lawyer. He died on January 17, 1907 in Janesville and was also buried there.
