John Winthrop

John Winthrop ( born January 12, 1588 Edwardstone, Suffolk, England; † March 26, 1649 in Boston, Massachusetts ) was an English Puritan.

1629 John Winthrop as the successor of John Endecott was elected the second Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, which we achieved in April 1630 with a fleet of eleven ships and 700 settlers. Until his death in 1649 he was annually re-elected with a few exceptions, as governor of the colony and coined at this time the political development of the colony decisively. In his sermon A Model of Christian Charity of 1630 Winthrop coined the phrase " City upon a Hill ".

His son, John Winthrop, Jr., was governor of the Colony of Connecticut.
