John Witherspoon (actor)

John Witherspoon ( born January 27, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan) is an American comedy actor. He is best known for his roles in Hollywood Shuffle ( 1987), Boomerang (1992 ), Friday (1995 ) and the WB sitcom The Wayans Bros. from the 1990s. He is also known as Johnny Witherspoon and Detroit John. He started as a model for various department store catalogs. He began his career as a "stand - up comedian " with appearances in film and television combined.

For his role in the comedy series, The Tracy Morgan Show Witherspoon was nominated in 2004 for the BET Comedy Award.

His longtime friend David Letterman is the godfather of his son David.

His brother William wrote the Motown hit " What Becomes of the Brokenhearted ." He is the cousin of Lamont Dozier.

In addition, John Witherspoon lends the figure " Robert Freeman " in the original animated TV series The Boondocks his voice.
