John Wood Lewis, Sr.

Lewis John Wood ( born 1 February 1801 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, † July 11, 1865 in Canton, Cherokee County, Georgia ) was an American politician. He represented the state of Georgia during the Civil War as a senator in Konföderiertenkongress.

A native of South Carolina John Wood Lewis was first politically active in his home state as he belonged to the House of Representatives from South Carolina 1830-1831. He later moved to Georgia, where he was a member of the State Senate in 1845.

In the first Konföderiertenkongress Lewis pulled a April 7, 1962. In the election of November of the previous year the mandate was originally passed to Robert Augustus Toombs; However, this was denied because only the fifth ballot, the vote had fallen to him to accept it. The successor appointed Lewis resigned on January 19, 1863 again from the Parliament of after Herschel Johnson had decided the election for themselves.

The end of the Confederacy on June 23, 1865 Lewis lived to see with; three weeks later he died in Canton, where he was also buried.
