John Young (Scottish politician)

John Young ( born December 21, 1930 in Glasgow, † 3 November 2011) was a Scottish politician and member of the Conservative Party.

Life

Young attended Hillhead High School and the College of Commerce. He then studied at the University of Glasgow. Young then completed 1949-1951 his military service with the Royal Air Force and was then active in the economic sector.

Political career

Overall, Young was 35 years of uninterrupted member of Glasgow City Council. Here he conducted between 1977 and 1979, the minority Conservative government in Glasgow and was later repeatedly opposition leader. For the first time Young joined the British general election, 1966 elections at the national level. But in his constituency Rutherglen he only received the second highest number of votes and thus failed to reach the British House of Commons. In the general election of 1992, he joined in the constituency Glasgow Cathcart, however, was again not the direct mandate.

In the first Scottish Parliament elections in 1999, Young ran for the direct mandate of the constituency Eastwood, but got behind the Labour candidate Kenneth Macintosh only the second highest number of votes and thus missed the direct mandate of the constituency. Since Young was however set to the front ranks of the Regional Evaluation of the Conservative Party for choosing Region West of Scotland, he received as a result of the election results of the two list seats for the Conservative Party in this election region and moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament. Here he was after Winnie Ewing 's second oldest parliamentarians of this legislature. He served as deputy party spokesman on transport and the environment. For the Scottish Parliament elections in 2003 Young no longer went to.
