Johnny Berry

John James Berry ( born June 1, 1926 in Aldershot, Farnham † September 1994 ) was an English footballer. Berry joined in 1951 by Birmingham City to Manchester United with whom he won three British championships before he had to end his football career 609 after the crash of British European Airways flight.

At the age of 31 Berry had after the plane crash two months partly because of a broken skull, broken jaw, broken pelvis and broken leg spend in a hospital. During the treatment of his jaw he has also had to be pulled all the teeth. The consequences of these injuries, he could never play football again.

When he awoke he had no memories of the accident, because his injuries had caused a mild form of amnesia. A month after he regained consciousness, he learned about the plane crash, when he read an article about it in a newspaper.

Berry was a right winger, who attracted attention mainly through his technique and speed. In 277 games for Manchester United, he scored 44 goals. He played in his first six years at Manchester regularly in the starting lineup before he lost his place to the younger Kenny Morgans. Later, he led with his brother Peter a shop in Farnborough.

Johnny Berry died in September 1994 at the age of 68 after a short illness. He was the first surviving player of the plane crash, who died a natural death.

His son Neill is currently the Director of the Brampton Manor Secondary School and in 2007 published a book which covers the years of his father at Manchester United.
