Johnny Come Lately

Johnny Come Lately is an American film directed by William K. Howard from the year 1943. It is based on the novel by Louis Bromfield McLeod 's Folly.

Action

In 1906, Tom Richards comes in the small town of Ville Platt. He was formerly a newspaper editor, but loves his freedom too much to want to settle down. In Platt Ville he makes acquaintance with Vinnie McLeod, the publisher of the newspaper Shield and banner. It represents him as editor, as he should be convicted of vagrancy. Vinnie has worried not only that their newspaper is unprofitable and she just puts her last silver at a junk. Mayor W. M. Also Dougherty sets to her, she has his leadership style in a recent issue but criticized. He wants to print an embellished account of his work. In reality, however, the citizens of the small town feel pressured; Protection money to be claimed Dougherty disguised as charity donations. Production

Johnny Come Lately was filmed at the Samuel Goldwyn Studios from 5 April to end of May 1943. The film was released in theaters on September 3, 1943.

It was the first self-production, the James Cagney brought out after his departure from Warner Bros. with his brother William. It was also James Cagney's first film after Yankee Doodle Dandy in 1942, for which he was awarded the Oscar for best actor.

Criticism

The New York Times criticized the film: The action is not timely ( " archaic " ), predictable and boring ( " Obvious and unexciting " ), the timing is poor and the movements stiff. The paper summarized that it pained, wasted Cagney's talent in these second-rate movie to see ( " it hurts to see Mr. Cagney [ ... ] wasting his excellent talent search on a curiously second- rate film" ).

Variety called the film, although a conventional melodrama ( "familiar melodrama " ), was, however, that Cagney game betting do with Howard's directorial shortcomings of the script.

Awards

Leigh Harline was nominated for a 1944 Academy Award for Best Original Score ( Drama / Comedy ), but could not free himself from Alfred Newman interspersed ( The Song of Bernadette ).
