Johnny Giles

Michael John "Johnny" Giles ( born November 6, 1940 in Dublin ) is a former Irish football player and coach. He spent his playing career, among other things successfully at Manchester United and Leeds United. For the Irish football team, he played in almost 20 years, 59 internationals.

Giles came in 1956 from Dublin to Manchester, where his first club Manchester United was. With United he won the FA Cup in 1963 and went to Leeds a year later. With Leeds United Giles was twice English Champions, two FA Cup winners in 1968 and 1971 and won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. For Leeds United midfielder scored 114 goals in 525 games. His last position in professional football was West Bromwich Albion. There he worked until 1977 as a player-coach. 59 times he came to the Irish national football team to use when she met five times to score. Later, Giles first player coach of the Irish national team, but failed to qualify for the European Championship 1976. After working at West Brom Giles moved to the dugout of Shamrock Rovers, before he mainly coached clubs in North America in the 1980s. Today, he works for the Irish broadcasting as a sports journalist.

For his autobiography, A Football Man - My Autobiography Giles was awarded the 2010 Irish Book Award in the category of sports book.
