Johnny Warren

John "Johnny" Warren ( born May 17, 1943 in Randwick ( Sydney ); † 6 November 2004) was an Australian football player. Warren, who was also known by the name "Captain Socceroo ", was for many years captain of the Australian national team. He played 62 international matches.

Career

He participated with the Australian national football team at the Football World Cup 1974 in Germany. This participation was until 2006 the only part of an Australian national football team to a World Cup. Then Warren worked successfully as a coach, television commentator and author.

Queen Elizabeth II honored Warren in 1973 as a member of the British Empire ( MBE). In 1988 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the 200 most important Australians.

In July 2004 he received the Order of Merit of the World Federation of FIFA president Sepp Blatter in Sydney. He was thus on a par with football greats such as the Dutchman Johan Cruyff, Eusebio and Franz Beckenbauer. Also they have received this award. At the award ceremony in July, the traces of his illness were already clearly visible.

Warren died on 6 November 2004 at the age of 61 years, after 2 years of disease from lung cancer. He received a state funeral as so far only athlete in Australia.

Since 1990, the Johnny Warren Medal is awarded for the best players in the Australian club competitions each year.
