Johnny Winter

Johnny Winter ( born February 23, 1944 as John Dawson Winter III in Beaumont, Texas ) is an American blues guitarist, singer and producer. His influences are Muddy Waters, BB King and Bobby Bland.

Life

Johnny Winter came with albinism to the world. He is the older brother of musician and composer Edgar Winter. From a young age he appeared along with it. When he was fifteen years old, took the two with her band Johnny and the Jammers, the disk School Day Blues at a record label in Houston on.

1968 Johnny Winter began playing in a trio with bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Uncle John Turner. Through an article in Rolling Stone, they received some attention and got a contract with the small label Liberty. After an appearance at the Fillmore East in early 1968 the level of awareness of the musician rose to such an extent that soon RCA and Columbia were fighting over him. After Columbia had won the race for himself and paid a very high for that time advance of $ 600,000, Winter published in May 1969 the album Johnny Winter.

Although the performance was filmed in August 1969 at the Woodstock Festival, he did not appear in the film because his manager had a falling out with the film crew. The crew was then of the opinion that the performance was " too weird ".

In 1970 he recorded the song Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo on with a band, which also included Rick Derringer and Randy Jo Hobbs of The McCoys. After massive drug problems until 1973, he returned with Still Alive and Well back ( with the participation of the flutist Jeremy Steig ).

In another area he was involved in 1977, when he produced Hard Again by Muddy Waters. The partnership of the two produced some albums that have won Grammy Awards. In the same year he also took Nothing but the Blues along with members of Waters ' band.

In the early morning of April 22, 1979 Johnny Winter emerged as top act of the 4th Rockpalast night in Essen Grugahalle. This performance made him very well known in one fell swoop into Europe. 1988 was followed by acceptance into the Blues Hall of Fame.

On May 12, 2007, there was on the Museum Square in Bonn to a sensational Rockpalast concert in which Johnny Winter appeared as a third volume by Rick Derringer and his brother Edgar Winter. Previously, the three artists had successfully completed a number of appearances in the U.S. in this constellation.

In the fall of 2008, Johnny Winter and his band played ( and with Eric Sardinas & Big Motor as the opening act ) several concerts in Europe, as in 2010 - for example, on the Leverkusen Jazz Days.

In 2012, he was back on tour in Germany after he published with Roots in 2011, his 18th studio album, which involves many other blues musicians.
