Johnson County (Indiana)

Johnson County is a county located in the state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Franklin.

Geography

The County is located just south of the geographic center of Indiana and has an area of 833 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Marion County, Shelby County, Bartholomew County, Monroe County and Morgan County.

History

Johnson County was formed on December 31, 1822 as an original county of free territory. It was named after John Johnson, an early Justice of the Supreme Court of Indiana.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Johnson County 115 209 people in 42 434 households and 31 613 families. The population density was 139 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.04 percent White, 0.79 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 0.84 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.48 percent from other races groups; 0.65 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.38 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 42 434 households out of which 37.4 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 62.0 percent were married couples living together, 9.0 percent were single mothers and 25.5 percent were non-families. 21.2 percent of all households and 7.3 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.06.

27.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.7 percent between 18 to 24, 30.8 percent between 25 and 44 years. 22.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 96 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 92.8 males.

The median income for a household in the U.S. $ 52,693, and the median income for a family U.S. $ 60,571. Males had a median income of U.S. $ 42,272, U.S. $ 28,181 women. The per capita income was U.S. $ 22,976. 3.3 percent of families and 5.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
