Johnson County (Kentucky)

Johnson County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Paintsville, which was named after the Paint Creek, where it is located. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in Eastern Kentucky, is about 30 km from West Virginia hotel and has an area of 684 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lawrence County, Martin County, Floyd County, Magoffin County and Morgan County.

History

Johnson County was formed on February 24, 1843 from parts of Floyd County, Lawrence County and Morgan County. It was named after Richard M. Johnson, a General, U.S. Senator, member of the U.S. Congress and Vice - President.
