Johnston County (North Carolina)

Johnston County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. In 2000, the County had 121 965 inhabitants and a population density of 59 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Smithfield, which was named after John Smith, who donated the land for the founding of the city.

Geography

The County is located east of the geographic center of North Carolina and has an area of ​​2061 square kilometers, of which 10 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Nash County, Wilson County, Wayne County, Sampson County, Harnett County and Wake County.

Johnston County is divided into 17 townships: Banner, Bentonville, Beulah, Boon Hill, Clayton, Cleveland, Elevation, Ingrams, Meadow, Micro, O'Neals, Pine Level, Pleasant Grove, Selma, Smithfield, Wilders and Wilson Mills.

History

Johnston County was formed in 1746 from parts of Craven County. It was named for Gabriel Johnston, Governor of North Carolina from 1734 to 1752.
