The port city of Johor Bahru (the " new gem ", other spellings: Johore Bahru, Johor Baharu ) is a city in Malaysia at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, directly opposite the island of Singapore. Colloquially, the city in the region is referred to as " JB ".

Johor Bahru is the capital of the state of Johor and with about 900,000 inhabitants in the city proper and 1,800,000 people in the greater suburbs with one of the economic centers of Malaysia.

Due to its proximity to Singapore, the city became a transportation hub with high retail volumes.

Attractions are the Sultan's palace, the park " Istana Garden Johor ", as well as the Abu Bakar Mosque and Sri Mariamman Temple.

From Johor Bahru comes by means of large pipes on the " Causeway ", a causeway, a considerable part of the water supply for Singapore.

History

Johor Bahru was founded in 1855 after the ruler of Johor, Temenggong Ibrahim Daing moved the headquarters of the administration there. At the time, the place as Tanjung Puteri was known, a small Malay fishing village. Tanjung Puteri was then renamed on 1 January 1866 by Ibrahim's son and successor, Temenggong Abu Bakar of Johor in Johor Bahru. Under Abu Bakar Johor Bahru experienced a rapid growth. In the Battle of Malaya in World War II, the Japanese army captured 31 January 1942, the city and the residence of the Sultan became a planning center for the conquest of Singapore, the neighboring city of Johor Bahrus. Shortly after the war, the city became a center of Malay nationalism. Johor Bahru became the birthplace of the United Malay National Organisation ( UMNO ), the dominant political force in the ruling coalition Barisan Nasional.

In the 1960s, the city experienced an economic boom. This led to development of residential areas and industrial sites. Due to the steady growth of Johor Bahru was finally awarded the city status on 1 January 1994.
