Joinville (Haute-Marne)
Joinville is a commune with 3560 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haute -Marne, in the Champagne -Ardenne region.
Geography
Joinville is the fourth largest city in the Haute- Marne. It lies on the River Marne, which crosses the city. Downstream of the city is the Marne by the largest artificial lake in France, Lake Der- Chantecoq regulated. The river also feeds the Canal entre Champagne et Bourgogne ( dt: canal between Champagne and Burgundy ) by which - allowing a navigable route from the Paris region to the Mediterranean - taking advantage of other rivers and canals.
History
- The establishment of Joinville to go back to Jovinus who had built here a fortress in 354, to keep the defeated of the later Emperor Julian Alemanni barriers.
- Stephan from Joinville (fr: Étienne de Vaux ) can build the castle in 1027.
- Gottfried III. , One of his direct descendants, donated in 1163, the Collegiate Church of St. Laurent, grave laying of the later masters of Joinville, for which the sculptor Jacques Bachot to 1495/1504 created two late Gothic, now lost tombs.
- From the family of Vaux- Joinville derived from two bishops: Guido III. from the Diocese of Châlons died in 1190 during the Third Crusade in Palestine and
- Guillaume de Joinville from the Diocese of Langres Archbishop of Rheims and crowned Louis VIII King of France.
