Joke Waller-Hunter

Joke Waller -Hunter (* November 15 1946 in Haarlem, † 14 October 2005 in Lohmar ) was a Dutch politician and worked for international organizations in the areas of environmental and climate protection.

Biography

With the entry into the administration of the Dutch province of North Holland in 1973, she began her career in the field of environmental management. There she worked as a civil servant for Environmental Information and Koordiniererin for environmental planning. In the years 1984-1994 she worked for civil engineering, spatial planning and the environment in the Dutch Ministry. There, she served as Deputy Director for International Environmental Affairs. In this position, she was actively involved in the preparations for the UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. From 1992 to 1994 she was responsible for the preparation of the second national plan for Dutch environmental policy as Director of Strategic Planning.

1994 Waller -Hunter was appointed the first director of the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development, a post which she held until 1998. From 1998 to 2002 she was Director of the Environment Unit at the OECD in Paris. She then moved to the Secretariat of the Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Bonn, where she took up the post of Secretary General on 1 May 2002, she held until her death in October 2005. In her tenure, the entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol fell on 16 February 2005.

In September 2005, she received an honorary doctorate from the Free University of Amsterdam for their contribution to society through their outstanding work in the field of sustainable development and global climate protection.
