Jökulsárgljúfur National Park

The Jökulsárgljúfur National Park is located in northern Iceland on the banks of the river Jökulsá Fjöllum and extends from the horseshoe-shaped canyon Ásbyrgi in the north to the most powerful ( water-rich ) waterfall in Europe, the Dettifoss, in the south. The southern part was set up in 1973, the northern area around Ásbyrgi came in 1978 to do so.

Since the founding of the Vatnajökull National Park on June 7, 2008, he heard about this.

Attractions

The National Park south of Ásbyrgi fascinated by a bizarre system of canyons with very striking volcanic mountains. 8,000 years ago has erupted directly under the mighty river a volcano. The coincidence of fire, gases and water resulted in tremendous explosions that tore the surrounding mountains partially normal. The area is referred to as Hljóðaklettar (Echo Rocks ).

On the other hand, one finds but also beautiful Lavarosetten or shapes the imaginative names like Karl og Kerling (man and woman) wear or Kirkjan. Worth mentioning here as mountain for miles around is the highest of the Rauðhólar.

Further south, the mighty gorge Hafragilsundirlendi closes on whose walls are high partly 100m. The gray- colored by the suspended particles carried along glacial river Jökulsá Fjöllum here has numerous freshwater inflows that cause an impressive play of color, when they meet with the gray water masses.
