Diola ( Jola also ) is the name given to the language of the same ethnicity of the Diola in Senegal, Gambia and Guinea- Bissau and belongs to the Atlantic group of the Niger -Congo language family.
In Ethnologue, Languages of the World is the Diola ( there Jola Proper ) divided into 9 single languages, while others view them as dialects of a language. The greatest variety is among the Jola - Fonyi with about 340,000 speakers in Senegal, about 67,000 in Gambia and around 6,500 in Guinea- Bissau.
All varieties of the Diola have over 3 million speakers together.

The language Diola ( Jola ) is not to be confused with the Mande language Diula ( Jula ) (see Jula ( people ) ), which is spoken in Burkina Faso, Côte d' Ivoire and Mali.
