Joliet (file system)

Joliet is a file system for CD- ROMs by Microsoft. It has not been defined as an extension of the ISO 9660 standard, but is based on the data structures of ISO 9660, which are interpreted differently than in the standard. Since the Joliet file system is independent and is no logical connection in addition to the ISO 9660 file system, in contrast to Rockridge no connection between the file name in ISO 9660 and Joliet.

In the Joliet file system, a file name can be up to 64 characters long, a path name can not be longer than 120 characters including filename. File names can, in contrast to ISO 9660 include uppercase and lowercase letters and Unicode characters.

CDs Joliet format contain two file systems: A real ISO 9660 file system for compatibility reasons and the actual Joliet system. The file contents are often drawn to the same areas of the medium. About the block numbers this shared could be produced theoretically connections with the file name in Joliet and ISO 9660 range, but this link is not possible with empty files.
