Oy Jolla, also known as Jolla Mobile and internationally as Jolla Limited (Ltd. ), is a Finnish company that develops and sells smartphones based on operating system Sailfish OS. It continues the work that was started at Nokia with the previously single MeeGo phone, the Nokia N9. After Nokia had decided to completely switch to Microsoft Windows Phone, MeeGo Development was set there. The Jolla team consists of managers and key personnel of the old Nokia N9 teams, while other developers in the Linux area were recruited. The company-owned successor of the operating system MeeGo, " Sailfish OS" was presented in late 2012, introduced the first smartphone in late May 2013. The company name is equivalent to the German word dinghy, so called a small rescue, rowing or sailing boat for one or two people.

History

Jolla was founded by former Nokia employees, as a new company in order to continue working on MeeGo. MeeGo in turn was a combination of Nokia's Maemo and Intel's Moblin operating system. After Nokia had decided not to pursue further and MeeGo to focus on Microsoft's Windows Phone, Intel was looking for a new partner in the mobile industry. There was Samsung and both companies are now pursuing their new community project called Tizen, with the big difference that should originally Tizen no longer support the Qt library (more on that below Tizen compatibility). Since then, the approach was practical MeeGo history, even if both MeeGo and Tizen are a project of the Linux Foundation. Only funded by donations open source project Mer (operating system) put the MeeGo tradition, but gave up a user interface and hardware driver layers and thus provides only the core libraries of an operating system based on Linux for use in the mobile space. Many Nokia employees were laid off at about the same time, or not renewed their contracts. Through Nokia's Bridge program was given to the affected employees the opportunity to become self-employed and start their own companies. This was also true Jussi Hurmola and Marc Dillon, the 2011 Mobile Jolla founded.

Through the bridge program Nokia Jolla and are in contact and Nokia knows Jollas plans. Therefore Jollas CEO did not expect any patent issues with Nokia. However Jolla donated by Nokia no patents. Consequently Jolla holds no rights to the Nokia N9, which is why no support is provided by Jolla. This is also the reason why Jolla can use at the surface of Sailfish another OS user guide and not patented by Nokia SWIPE technology.

First reactions to the trade press on the launch certify a ... successful entry of the smartphone market ... and ... that not much has been found which needs to be improved. There was also criticism that Sailfish OS insufficiently fast reacting and operation of the smartphone is getting used to.

Software

Jollas devices use the operating system Sailfish, which was presented on 21 November 2012. It is used the RPM package manager.

Sailfish OS

Sailfish OS is based on the work of the Mer project. The Mer - development environment supports different CPU architectures, at the moment are the ARMv6l, ARMv7l, ARMv7hl, mipsel and x86. However, the Mer - core distribution is delivered without the Linux kernel. There are only libraries contain above the kernel layer and below the interface, ie from the average operating system level. Logically, has Mer unlike Meego no longer own surface. The old Meego user interface but it will continue under its own project Nemo. In order to obtain a complete Sailfish OS Linux distribution, ie, a device-specific Linux kernel, a version of the Mer -core and Jollas user interface must be combined. The development of all three components run independently of each other. Software development cycles are independent of the hardware development cycles. Through this decouplings, the developers promise a faster support for new hardware components, as well as a hardware-independent development of the user interface, just more flexibility. Jolla developed its own user interface and calls its combination with Mer Sailfish OS. Applications can be written in HTML5 and Qt and QML.

Graphics display system

Unlike many traditional Linux distributions Jolla sets at Sailfish OS on Wayland instead of X11. To use the widely used in smartphones Android GPU driver, fit Jolla developer Carsten Munk Wayland accordingly. Details of its implementation are to learn from two of his blog entries.

Development environment

There are currently four developer environments for Linux ( 32 and 64bit ) and Windows and MacOS, with which one can create native apps for Sailfish OS. The development environment uses the Qt library with a Virtual Box for the development and support of various systems such as Android, Linux, iOS, or Windows. This, together with the open character of the SDK allow the SDK to specific environments, companies, groups of developers to adapt or extend. Beginning of August 2013 published on its website Jolla SailfishOS.org an updated version, in which the support of QT5, QtQuick and Wayland have been added. In addition, the SDK now has an automatic update function.

Areas of application

Sailfish OS is designed by the flexible software architecture already mentioned with the three layers of software for a variety of devices. As an example, mobile devices ( smartphones and tablets ), computers, laptops, GPS devices, smart TVs, automotive IVI, yachts and boats and household appliances were given - which also corresponded to the situation already under MeeGo.

Compatible Android Phones

In February 2014 Jolla announced to want to offer within the first half of 2014 Sailfish OS also for popular Android devices. First, there will be a user-interface simulation, which you can install via app stores, later to be followed by the entire operating system. At the Mobile World Congress 2014 ( MWC14 ) Jolla Sailfish OS showed on the following devices:

  • Google Nexus 4
  • Samsung S3 LTE ( i9305 )
  • TCL Idol X S950 (identical to ALCATEL ONE TOUCH X Idol 6040 )

Licensing

Each interested smartphone manufacturers provides Jolla its operating system available for licensing. Details of the licensing are not yet known, but will be available under an open source license the complete Sailfish OS.

Applications

Jolla offers for Sailfish OS to its own app store called " Jolla Harbour " in the developer not only specially written for Sailfish OS programs can upload to Qt - based, but also Android applications. In addition, the virtual marketplace of Yandex provides an additional range of Android programs

Common API with other Linux mobile systems

Since it technically is as described above, no major differences between Ubuntu and mobile system Jolla, according to a report on Techweekeurope have added discussions on a uniform programming together with the Plasma Workspaces of the KDE project that also use Qt both parties. This would make it possible to support multiple systems with just one app, with the design of the graphic outputs would differ depending on the system itself.

Hardware

Type: Qualcomm Snapdragon dual- core 1.4 Ghz

GSM / GPRS / EDGE UMTS LTE

Functional, removable back, which can be connected to the I2C and NFC to the main processor. AGPS, GLONASS

On May 20, 2013 Jolla presented its first smartphone under the name " Jolla ". It has a dual-core processor, 16 gigabytes of internal memory, supports both 3G and LTE networks, has a 4.5 inch screen, and a replaceable by the user battery.

Unique feature is the removable rear panel with the name "The other half" (the other half). In contrast to previous mobile phones Jollas has rear electrical connection to the main unit, so that its functionality can be extended. According Jollas COO extensions would only set " by the imagination " limits, initially there was only a relatively simple logic that adjusted the background color of the menu operating system to the color of the back part just used. At the fair Akademy 2013 further details of the function were called. So you could use as a party and a working rear half that automatically Social - media services on or off or turn calls the employer makes. It was also cited as an example a keyboard. The back half has its own data and power connection (the former via an I2C bus ), ie it is used not only NFC. The price of the device is 399 euros. Jolla plans with sales in the order of one million units. In Finland, the mobile phone in the month of December reached the telecommunications providers DNA Oy among the smartphones sold 5th place and in the price range over 300,00 Euro 1 Place

Device design

The design comes from infinity, a Finnish design company, which is working on Jollas first mobile phone since September / October 2012. So far, Infinity was well known for the design of Nokia's headsets, chargers, and some smartphones from Huawei, but also has worked for BMW.
