Jólnir

Jólnir was an island that was created in 1966 from volcanic activity and is now gone down again. Jólnir is located south of Iceland and is an eruption vent of Surtsey volcano. Other islands with the same property are Syrtlingur and Surtla.

The name derives from the Norse mythology and is another name for the god Odin.

The emergence of Jólnir is closely linked to the neighboring island of Surtsey, which was created in 1963. In the region of volcanic activity took place and some small islands emerged. 1966 Jólnir raised up to 70 meters above the sea level. Nevertheless, the island eroded after the end of volcanic activity on August 8, 1966 and again in October 1966, fell back below the sea level.
