It is believed that the Jomsvikinga saga is mostly fiction. The fact that the mercenaries covenant described actually exists, but it can be assumed, as other sagas and documents of the time refer to it.

During the Third Reich, the saga has been very commonly received and translated for their substantive links to male bonding theory. So between 1934 and 1939 no less than eight translations from Old Icelandic were submitted into German.
