Jon Hassell

Jon Hassell ( born March 22, 1937 in Memphis ( Tennessee)) is an American trumpeter and composer of fusion music. He is known for his influence on the world music scene and his acoustic and electronic changes of the trumpet sound.

Life and work

After a childhood in Memphis, interest in cool jazz and classical training at the Eastman School of Music and at the Catholic University Hassell studied in Cologne with Karlheinz Stockhausen. He returned in 1967 returned to the U.S., where he met Terry Riley and was involved in the initial reception of In C. During his doctoral studies in Buffalo, he was married to Katrina Krimsky and member of Dreamhouse Ensemble of La Monte Young.
