Jonas ÄŒernius

Jonas Černius ( born January 6, 1898 in Kupiškis; † July 3, 1977 in Los Angeles, USA) was an officer in 1939 and briefly Lithuanian Prime Minister.

Life

He graduated from elementary school and high school Kupiškis Panevėžys.

After the declaration of independence of Lithuania in 1919 he enlisted volunteered for the army. He then studied at the military school in Lithuania, in 1929 he graduated from the School of Military Engineering in Brussels and 1932 the military academy in Paris. 1935-1939 he was Chief of the General Staff in the rank of brigadier general.

Jonas Černius was Lithuanian Prime Minister from 27 March to 21 November 1939.

1940-1941 he served in the Red Army, had been integrated into the parts of the Lithuanian army after the occupation of Lithuania, with the rank of major general.

With the retreating Wehrmacht, he fled to first to Germany, then to England. In 1948 he emigrated to the USA and worked as an engineer at General Motors.
