Jonathan Agnew

Jonathan Agnew ( born April 4, 1960 in Macclesfield, Cheshire ) is a former English cricketer, who now works as a radio commentator for Test Match Special.

Sporting career

Agnew played from 1978 to 1990 first-class cricket for Leicestershire in the County Championship. As a fast bowler, he reached 666 wickets in 218 matches. In addition, it was used in 147 List A matches.

In the years 1984/85 he played in three Test matches and three One- Day Internationals for England to have no particular success. The English team was then in a difficult position after suffering massive defeats against the West Indies.

He had his best season in 1987 when he scored 101 wickets. The following year he was nominated as one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year. He finished his career at the age of 30 years for a cricket player very early.

In 1992 he played again in the Natwest Trophy final, as Leicestershire was greatly weakened injury. His team was defeated, however.

Commentator

After he had worked during his active career as a commentator for BBC Radio Leicester, a local radio program the BBC, Agnew 1990 cricket correspondent of the short-lived newspaper Today.

Since 1991 he works for the BBC. The previous year, he joined the team of reporters Test Match Special, the world's most famous live broadcast in cricket sport in the Test matches and One- Day Internationals of the English team are transmitted. His nickname there is Aggers.

After the death of Brian Johnston 1994 he became cricket chief reporter of the BBC. Since then, he also runs the Test Match Special team. His discussions and joint live reports with the former England player and now commentator Geoffrey Boycott are generally appreciated.
