Jonathan (apple)

Intersection of Esopus mountain peak × unknown

Jonathan is a type of apple, the origin of which is a seedling of the variety Esopus mountain peak, found on the farm of Philip Rick, New York. 1826 this species was first described.

Description

The variety Jonathan grows low to medium and forms a rounded crown with thin stems. The tree requires a warm location and a nutrient-rich, rather dry soil. As a diploid variety is Jonathan as good pollinator. The income is regular and high. Vulnerability exists against apple scab, powdery mildew and fire blight.

The fruit is medium in size and dark red over green-yellow color. The taste is delicate sweet-sour, aromatic, and the light yellow flesh is firm and juicy. The harvest time is the end of September, the maturity for consumption runs from November to early April. The shelf life is good both under conventional conditions as well as in CA storage. The fruits are, however, often spotty.
