Jonathan Brace

Jonathan Brace ( born November 12, 1754 Harwinton, Litchfield County, Connecticut; † August 26, 1837 in Hartford, Connecticut ) was an American politician. Between 1798 and 1800 he represented the state of Connecticut in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Jonathan Brace grew even during the British colonial era and attended primary school in his home country. Then he studied until 1779 at Harvard College, which later became Harvard University. After studying law and qualifying as a lawyer, he started in Pawlet (Vermont ) to work in his new profession. In 1782 he moved his residence and his law practice to Manchester in Vermont. He also belonged to a committee to revise the constitution of Vermont. Between 1784 and 1785 acted Brace as district attorney in Bennington County.

In January 1786 Brace moved to Glastonbury in Connecticut. In his new home state but was only approved in 1790 as an attorney. In the meantime, Brace began a political career. In 1788 and from 1791 to 1794 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from Connecticut. In 1794 he moved to Hartford, where until 1815 he worked as a municipal judge from 1797 to 1798 and from 1800. After the death of Congressman Joshua Coit on September 5, 1798 Jonathan Brace was chosen as the candidate of the Federalist Party in a by-election to succeed him in the U.S. House of Representatives. In the regular congressional elections, he was confirmed in this mandate, which he took on 3 December 1798. Brace remained but only up to the year 1800 in Congress. Then he resigned his mandate.

In addition to his aforementioned activities judge in Hartford he was a 1802-1818 member of the State Council of Connecticut. Between 1807 and 1809 he also worked as a district attorney in Hartford County. After 1809 he was also a judge in this county. This office he held until 1821. At the same time he was in the same region 1809-1824 restructuring judge. Between 1815 and 1824 he was also still mayor of Hartford and in the years 1819 and 1820 member of the State Senate. After 1824 Jonathan Brace has not engaged in any other public office more. He died on August 26, 1837 in Hartford.
