Jonathan Marland, Baron Marland

Jonathan Peter Marland, Baron Marland, of Odstock in the County of Wiltshire ( born 14 August 1956 ) is a British politician and manager of the Conservative Party, which is a life peer member of the House of Lords since 2006.

Life

After visiting Shrewsbury School Marland worked as an insurance agent, and finally director of Jardine Lloyd Thompson Insurance Agency plc. In the general election on 7 June 2001 ran unsuccessfully for Marland the Conservative Party in the constituency Somerset and Frome for a seat in the House of Commons. In the following years he was 2003-2007 Treasurer of the Conservative Party and was at the same time between 2005 and 2007 the Board of the Party. He was also from 2005 to 2006 director of the company C & UCO Properties, which manages the property of the Conservative Party.

By Letters Patent dated 8 June 2006 Marland was raised as a life peer with the title Baron Marland, of Odstock in the County of Wiltshire to the peerage. Shortly afterwards, on 12 June 2006 was his introduction ( Introduction) as a member of the House of Lords. In the upper house he belongs to the Group of the Conservative Party.

In the following years he was between 2007 and 2008 Treasurer of the successful election campaign of Boris Johnson for the office of Mayor of London at the mayoral election on 1 May 2008, Johnson won against Ken Livingstone, the candidate of the Labour Party. Subsequently, he was between 2008 and 2010 on the development committee of the Royal Academy of Arts. In 2010, Lord Marland Parliamentary Secretary ( Whip ) the opposition Tory group in the House of Lords and was also until 2010 opposition spokesman for the Cabinet Office ( Cabinet Office ) and Energy and Climate Change.

After the electoral victory of the Conservative Party in the general election on 6 May 2010 and the inauguration of David Cameron as Prime Minister in 2010, he was Parliamentary Under Secretary of State and government spokesman at the Ministry of Energy and Climate Change. Since 2012, Lord Marland is Parliamentary Secretary and Government Spokesperson, Department of Enterprise, Innovation and Skills. In this capacity, he represented the interests of the government in the field of enterprise policy in the House of Lords, until he resigned from that role in the House of Lords on 8 January 2013.
