Jonathan Mestel

Andrew Jonathan Mestel ( born March 13, 1957 in Cambridge ) is an English chess player.

Life

Mestel won the World Championship under 16 year olds and the British Championship three times (1976, 1983 and 1988) 1974. In the tradition of Hastings tournament he won in 1983/84 to third place.

He became an International Master in 1977 and 1982, Grand Master of the World Chess Federation FIDE. He also has the Grandmaster title in solving chess problems, in 2002 he finished third, second in the 2005 world championships in this discipline.

Jonathan Mestel works as a PhD in mathematics at Imperial College in London, he is the son of astronomer Leon Mestel.

Since July 2012 Mestel has played no -evaluated lot more, his Elo rating is since 2471st His highest Elo rating was 2545 in July 1984, he was at that time together with Efim Geller and Larry Christiansen on the 35th place in the FIDE world ranking list.

Chess team

National

Mestel played 1976-1988 six times successfully for England at Chess Olympiads. He arrived with the team in 1984 and 1988, second place, in 1984 he also won the individual competition on the first reserve board. Mestel also took part in the European Team Championships in 1977, 1980 and 1983 ( where he achieved the best result on the fourth board ) and at the World Team Championship in 1985.

Chess club

In the British Four Nations Chess League ( 4NCL ) played Mestel 1994 to 1999 for the crew of the British Chess Magazine from 1999 to 2012 for The ADs (2000 to 2002 under the name Beeson Gregory ) formed by the merger of the British Chess Magazine originated with index -IT. 2001 and 2002 won the Mestel 4NCL.
