Jonathan Roberts (politician)

Jonathan Roberts ( * August 16, 1771 in Norristown, Pennsylvania, † July 24, 1854 in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania ) is an American politician ( Democratic- Republican), who represented the state of Pennsylvania in both houses of the U.S. Congress.

Life

After he had received as a boy private lessons, Jonathan Roberts went for a wheelwright in teaching. His political career began in 1799 with the election into the House of Representatives of Pennsylvania, where he remained until 1800. From 1807 to 1811 he was a senator of his home State.

In 1810 he was elected to the Democratic- Republican Party in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he represented the second congressional district of Pennsylvania. He was a member of the chamber of 4 March 1811 until his resignation on 24 February 1814. On this day, he moved within the Congress in the Senate, where he took the place of the retiring Michael body. He finished his term and was then elected himself for another six years in the Senate, where he ultimately remained until March 3, 1821. During this time, he served as chairman of the committee of the Committee on Claims.

After his time in Washington Roberts sat from 1823 to 1826 again in the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Between 1841 and 1842 he worked as a tax collector ( collector of customs) in the Port of Philadelphia. Jonathan Roberts died in July 1854 on his farm Robertsville in Montgomery County and was buried in the family cemetery.
