Jonathan S. Willis

Jonathan Spencer Willis ( born April 5, 1830 in Oxford, Talbot County, Maryland, † November 24, 1903 in Milford, Delaware ) was an American politician. Between 1895 and 1897 he represented the State of Delaware in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Jonathan Willis attended the public schools in his home district and enjoyed at times also a private education. After leaving school, he worked for seven years as a teacher before he became a pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In this capacity he worked until 1884 in the states of Maryland and Delaware, but also in Philadelphia, New York City and Stamford (Connecticut).

After giving up the office of the clergy in 1884, Willis managed a farm near Milford, where he also dealt with the fruit growing. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1892 he was defeated by 49 % to 51% of the popular vote Democrat John W. Causey. Two years later, he sat down with 51 % of the votes against by Samuel Bancroft. He was able to move as a deputy in the U.S. Congress on March 4, 1895. Since the Democrats Willis L. Irving Handy significantly with 32% lost to 44 % of the vote in the next elections, he completed until March 3, 1897, only one term in Congress.

After the end of his time in the House of Representatives to Jonathan Willis withdrew from politics. He returned to his farming and died in November 1903 in Milford. He was married to Edith Willis ( 1855-1914 ).
