Jonel Perlea

Ionel Perlea ( born December 13, 1900 in Ograda, Ialomiţa county, Romania, † July 29, 1970 in New York City, United States) was a Romanian conductor and composer.

Between 1918 and 1920 Perlea studied with Anton Beer- Walbrunn in Munich, 1920-1923 by Paul Graener at the Leipzig Conservatory of Music.

He debuted on October 17, 1919 at the Athenaeum ( Ateneul Român ) in Bucharest at the same time as a composer and performer. In 1926 he was awarded the Composition Prize George Enescu ( Premiul de compoziţie George Enescu ) for his String Quartet, Op 10

From 1927 to 1928 he worked as a conductor at the National Opera in Cluj, then went to the National Opera of Bucharest and took over until 1936, the function of music director and conductor.

In 1945, Ionel Perlea was in Rome on the podium of the Opera. His success brought him the offer of a permanent position for the console of the famous Teatro alla Scala in Milan, which simultaneously meant his final breakthrough in the international music business.

In 1949 he made ​​his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York with the opera Tristan und Isolde by Richard Wagner.

On the recommendation of Arturo Toscanini, who named him as his successor by inherited him his own conductor floor, Perlea signed a contract with the Connecticut Symphony Orchestra of New York for the year 1952 until 1959. Likewise Toscanini he also inherited the conductor professor at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, where he worked intermittently 1952-1970.

In 1969 Ionel Perlea his last concerts in the palace hall and the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest.

He suffered a stroke as a result of which he could not move his right hand. He managed to get direct with the left hand. So he still managed a brilliant performance with the performance of Tosca by Giacomo Puccini.

During his career, he has conducted many opera performances as in Vienna, Paris, Buenos Aires, Florence, Chicago, and has conducted major orchestras, especially in the United States but also with the Bamberg Symphony.
