Jonesborough is an American city in Washington County, Tennessee. It is the county seat ( county seat ).

History

Jonesborough was founded in 1779, 17 years before the founding of the State of Tennessee and originally belonged to North Carolina and is the first city in Tennessee. Was named the place after Willie Jones, a deputy of the Continental Congress and supporters of the western extension of the North Carolina Appalachians beyond.

In December 1784 in Jonesborough the State of Franklin, named after Benjamin Franklin, founded as the capital of Jonesborough ( was replaced by Greeneville ). The State of Franklin served as the 14th state until 1788, but was never recognized by Congress and reintegrated into North Carolina.
