Jons Kapel

Jons Kapel ( "John's Chapel " ) is a rock formation located on the west coast of Bornholm, about 7 kilometers north of Hasle. The rock formations are the result of waves. , At a time when the sea level was much higher than now, beat against the rock The cliffs are about 41 meters high. The cliffs are named after a hermit who is said to have inhabited the caves there. Johns caves are visible from the beach below the cliffs.

Geography

The rock cliffs of Jons Kapel, which give a view over the west coast of the island can be reached from the parking lot at Jons Kapelvej by a steep staircase along a small creek, called Askebækken. Jons Kapel can be viewed from the beach, north of the point where the path reaches the coast. The rocks consist of Vanggranit, named after the northern fishing village of Vang. In the rocks there are several caves. John's cave high above the sea. North of the cave there is a nearly vertical rock wall, known as Hvidkleven ( " White Rock "). The slightly south caves hot Jons Sovekammer ( Johns bedrooms), Jon Sakristi, Jons Spisestue ( Johns dining room) and Jon Madkælder ( Johns food cellar). The Legend of John

According to legend, John was a hermit, who was sent to Bornholm to bring Christianity to the island. He settled in a cave in the rocks. The Bornholm were curious to see who was John, and visited him while he told them stories from the Bible. Finally, he was visited by so many people that not all found a place in the cave. To ensure that all his stories could hear John ascended the rocks to a natural lookout point called Prædikestolen ( " pulpit "). It was said that John preached also to the seagulls and the waves.
