Joop Atsma

Johannes Jan " Joop " Atsma ( born July 6, 1956 in Surhuisterveen, community Achtkarspelen, Province of Friesland ) is a Dutch politician, former sports official and, since October 14, 2010 Secretary of State for Infrastructure and Environment in the Cabinet Rutte I. He belongs to the Christian Democratisch Appèl to. Atsma lives in his birthplace.

Life

Atsma was born as the son of dairy farmers Pieter Atsma and his wife Tjitske van der Meer in Surhuisterveen. After attending high school ( Atheneum ) began a study of the history of science at the University of Groningen, which, however, he did not graduate. Since December 16, 1982 Atsma is married to Tea van der Schaaf.

Profession

From 1978 to 1989 Atsma worked as a journalist. He has worked for newspapers Nieuwsblad van het Noorden in Groningen (today in the Dagblad van het Noorden risen ) and Friesch Dagblad in Leeuwarden as well as for the press agency Algemeen Nederlands Persbureau. He also worked for public television and radio stations Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS ) and Omrop Fryslân.

From 1989 he was a full-time active for the Koninklijke Nederlandse Unie Wielren, the Dutch cycling association. In four Summer Olympics ( Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 ), he held the role as Chef d' Equipe at the bicycle race. Since 2009 Atsma is chairman of the way Commission of the Union Cycliste Internationale, the international cycling union. The Commission is also responsible for the adoption of rules, the schedule and the qualification criteria for the World Championships and Olympic Games.

Political career

Atsma began his political career as a member of the Frisian provincial parliament. He was Chairman of the Group for the CDA. In 1998 he was first elected to the Second Chamber of the States General. His parliamentary oath he took in Frisian. As an elected representative to Atsma care will target issues of sport, agriculture, food quality, the media and mining, which first and foremost related to the Netherlands with natural gas production. As a result, he was chairman of the Committee on Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality and Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Health, Welfare and Sport.
