Jordaan

The Jordaan is a district of Amsterdam, approximately between Nassaukade and Prinsengracht. With its small houses in the Jordaan was from time immemorial a typical working-class area; but at the end of the 20th century it was to stay "hip " here; prices shot up, so that rents the original inhabitants were too high.

The origin of the name is unclear. Sometimes reference is made to the eponymous river in Israel and Palestine; but given the many street names with references to the plant kingdom ( Lindegracht, Bloemgracht, Rosenstraat ), it is possible that the name on a corruption of the French word for garden, jardin, lead back, because in Amsterdam, many refugee Huguenots had settled.

Famous sons and daughters of this district are the educators Theo Thijssen, which also includes a small museum dedicated to Jan Lighart and singer Willy Alberti Johnny Jordaan, Tante Leen and the accordion player Johnny Meijer (the last three with a bronze statue on the Johnny Jordaanplein ).

In the Westerstraat in the Jordaan, the Pianola Museum and Elandsgracht the houseboat museum. In the Prinsengracht, the Amsterdam Tulip Museum ( Amsterdam Tulip Museum ), compared to the Anne Frank House.
