Geographical location

Jordsand was a small Danish holm in the Wadden Sea south of Romo and east of the island of Sylt.

As an island was Jordsand first time in 1231 under the name Hjortsand (see dän. Hjort "Deer" and sand " sand " ) with a size of 2,000 acres mentioned and was probably originally with both the mainland and the territory of the present island Sylt connected. The multiple mounds occupied holm lost by several storm surges continuously on land. Fraud its size in 1807, still 40.7 hectares, it shrank until the year 1873 to 18.4 hectares. The holm belonged to the municipality Jerpstedt. Between the German -Danish War of 1864 and the referendum in Schleswig in 1920 Jordsand was such a large part of the duchy of Schleswig to the German Reich.

After 1895 a storm surge had flooded the last mound, Jordsand was later used as pasture and for bird watching. Although since the 1970s increased coastal protection measures for the conservation of the island have been taken, the country's last still 2.3 acres of holm was removed from the lake throughout the winter of 1998 /99 and is now part of the same, several square kilometers large sandbar.
