Jörg Freyhof

Jörg Freyhof (* 1964 in Ludwigshafen, Germany) is a German ichthyologist and fish photographer.

Life and work

From 1986 to 1987 Freyhof attended the biological faculty of the Ruprecht -Karls- University of Heidelberg from 1987 to 1993, the Biological Faculty of the Rheinische Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. In 1993 he wrote his thesis on the temporal and spatial distribution patterns of juvenile fish in the victory. From 1993 to 2000 he was a research assistant at the Zoological Research Institute and Museum Alexander Koenig in Bonn. Here he led research projects over the long- term fluctuations within structures of the fish communities in the Rhine basin and on the diversity and perspectives of sustainable use of fish fauna in the central massif of Vietnam. In 1997 he earned his Ph.D. with a dissertation on the interactions between habitat and fish communities in the victory. Since 2000 he is a researcher at the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries in Berlin Research Association (ICA ).

Freyhofs research focuses on the evolutionary ecology, biodiversity, systematics and speciation European, Turkish and Vietnamese freshwater fish. He also took part in field trips to Cameroon, Egypt, the Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone and China.

One of the first described species of Freyhof include Sewellia albisuiera, Sewellia patella, Schistura susannae, Gobio delyamurei, Proterorhinus tataricus, Salvelinus evasus, Alburnus vistonicus and Capoeta Turanian.
