Jorge Amado

Jorge Amado ( born August 10, 1912 Itabuna, Bahia, Brazil Province; † August 6, 2001 in Salvador ) is considered one of the most important Latin American writers of the 20th century.

Life

He was born 1912, the son of a cocoa plantation owner in the Brazilian state of Bahia and grew up in the port city of Ilheus. Regarding the birthplace of Jorge Amado disagreement. Some biographers say his birthplace was the plantation Auricídia been, which belonged at that time to Ilheus. This fazenda but I have heard later Itajuípe. However, what seems certain is that the birth was registered in Ferradas, a village near Itabuna.

Amado attended a Jesuit school and worked 13 years as a laborer on plantations. Already at 12 he published a short story, and at 15 he was already writing for a newspaper. As a journalist and writer, he stood up for the poor and oppressed. He was imprisoned for his political beliefs and lived 1937 - 1942 in Argentina and Uruguay in exile. In 1945 he became Member of Parliament for the Communist Party and worked on the new Brazilian Constitution. After 1948 he went to Europe again into exile. In Paris, he was called " the Brazilian Victor Hugo " because he bought his modest incognito baguettes, without giving to identify themselves. After a long journey, he returned to Brazil.

His most famous work is the novel Amado's Gabriela such as cinnamon and cloves. His most important translator Curt Meyer- Clason was. Almost all the works of Amado play in northeastern Brazil, mainly in and around Bahia. His books describe the life and survival of ordinary people, often located in the milieu of the demimonde. Despite the material problems of his protagonists are full most of his books with vitality and zest for life. Many of the works Amados were filmed. The film version of Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands was one of the most successful Brazilian films ever made and the basis for a musical and a TV series. Amado was repeatedly a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature. In 1969 he was awarded the Prêmio Juca Pato, 1994, he was awarded the highly doped Prémio Camões.

Jorge Amado died shortly before reaching his 89th birthday on August 6, 2001 in Salvador of a heart attack. At his request, he was cremated and the ashes were scattered at the foot of a mango tree in the garden of his house in the Rua Alagoinhas.
