Jorge de Bagration

Don Jorge de Bagration y di Costafiorita ( born Giorgi Bagration - Mukhrani; born February 22, 1944 in Rome, † 16 January 2008 in Tbilisi ) was from 1991 the recognized head of the former royal house of Georgia. He had the Spanish nationality and operated successfully until the 1980s into a motor sports.

Life

He was born the only son of the Georgian nobility descendants Irakli Bagration - Mukhrani (1909-1977) and the Italian Countess Maria Antonietta Pasquini dei Conti di Costafiorita (1911-1944) in exile. His mother died in childbirth. His stepmother was 1946 Infanta Maria de las Mercedes of Spain ( 1911-1953 ), daughter of Prince Ferdinand of Bavaria and the Spanish Infanta Maria Theresa, daughter of King Alfonso XII ..

In 1959 he began a motorsport career. He first drove motorcycles and racing cars from 1963. Twice he tried in vain to take part in Formula 1 racing. His first attempt he undertook in 1968 when the Grand Prix of Spain with a Lola race car, the second in 1974 with a Surtees TS16. 1970, de Bagration on a Porsche 908 after four championship races at Interlagos are behind Emerson Fittipaldi runner-up of the so-called COPA BRASIL Championship in Brazil.

1979 and 1981 he won on a Lancia Stratos HF, the Spanish Rally Championship. In 1982 he withdrew from the race track, to make himself a name in the 1980s as a public relations director for Fiat Spain and Portugal.

1991 recognized the Georgian government and Parliament 's claim to the throne. In 1995 he first visited Georgia to bury his father's ashes there. He later moved to Georgia, where his sons David and Irakli live. In the vicinity of Tbilisi, he built a residence. He died of the sequelae of hepatitis and was buried on 20 January 2008 in the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta on the side of his ancestors.
