Jorge de Menezes

Jorge de Meneses (* c.1498; ? † ) was a Portuguese explorer and governor of Ternate, probably marranischer descent.

He lived in the early 16th century. He ended 1526 as the first Europeans in New Guinea when he was blown off course to the spice island of Maluku. He named the area, including the question -lying island groups do Islas Papua. The name was derived from the Malay word Papuwah, something like " crimped " means so much. This described the Malay crew the Melanesian inhabitants because of their typical Kraushaar. Although Meneses remained nearly a year, explored New Guinea but not because he camped with his crew offshore on one of the north-west coast island ( Waigeo ).
