Jorge Gutiérrez (boxer)

Jorge Gutiérrez (born 18 September 1975) is a former Cuban boxer. Gutiérrez was the winner of the Pan American Games in 1999, silver medalist at the 1999 World Championships and Olympic champion in 2000

Career

1994 Gutiérrez won the Junior World Championships ( U19) in the half- middleweight ( 71kg - ).

Gutiérrez was cuba ski shearing champion in 1999 and 2000. Between 1997 and 1998 he had each defeated Ariel Hernández in the final.

In 1997 Gutiérrez participated in the Pan American Championships and was able to middleweight ( - 75kg) win. The Central American and Caribbean Games 1999, he had also won the gold medal, but started again this time in the light middleweight. In the same year he also started at the Pan American Games, and was also able to win this. At the 1999 World Championships Gutierrez reached after victories over Nikola Sjekloca, Yugoslavia (9:1), Malik Dziarra, Belarus (8:2), Dilshod Yarbekov, Uzbekistan (8:1), and Ermakhan Ibraimov, Kazakhstan, the final, which he due to an injury without a fight against Marian Simion, Romania, lost and thus won the silver medal.

Early 2001, Gutierrez lost in the finals of the Cuban championships against Yordanis Despaigne ( 10:8 ). After an early exit at the Chemistry Cup in 2001 and a further defeat at the renowned Despaigne Giraldo Cordova Cardin tournament, Gutierrez retired from the ring.
