Jorma Valtonen

Jorma Valtonen (born 22 December 1946 in Turku ) is a retired Finnish professional ice hockey goaltender in his playing days from 1964 to 1987, both nationally and internationally, has received numerous individual awards.

Career

Jorma Valtonen began his career as a hockey player in his hometown at TPS Turku for the first team to 1966 he was active from 1964 in the SM- sarja. He then moved within the league to RU -38 Pori, with whom he immediately became Finnish Champion in the season 1966/67. In the following five years, the goalkeeper for Ässät Pori, the successor club of RU -38 ran on. With the club in 1971 he won also the Finnish championship. Especially in his last two years at Ässät he could convince himself. 1971 and 1972 respectively, he received the Lynces Academici Goalie Award of the SM - sarja, in the All-Star team, he was elected to two seasons. Addition, he became Finland's player of the year 1972. For the 1972/73 season changed Valtonen within the SM- sarja to Jokerit Helsinki. With the capital club, he was also at first Finnish Champion. After a total of two years he left the club and joined for the season 1974/75 FPS Forssa from the second Finnish league, the I divisioona on.

From 1975 to 1978 held a three-year commitment in the Italian Serie A1, in which he was initially two seasons for the HC Gherdeina and then in 1977/ 78 for the HC Alleghe between the posts. With the HC Gherdeina he was Italian Champion in 1976. From 1978 to 1980 played the long-time national player for his hometown club TPS Turku in 1975 the newly founded Finnish highest league, the SM- liiga. He was able to build on its previous achievements and was both 1978/79, and 1979/80 awarded the Urpo - Ylönen trophy as the best goalkeeper in the SM- liiga. In 1980 he also received the Lynces Academici Goalie Award of the SM - liiga, in the All-Star team, he was elected also. The 1980/81 season spent Valtonen the EHC München 70 in the hockey league. After only one year, he left the Bayern back already and returned again to TPS Turku, for which he still aground until the end of the 1986/87 season in the SM- liiga. In the seasons 1981/82 and 1984/85, he came again runner-up with his team.

In 1989, Valtonen was admitted as 67th overall player ever in the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame. Ten years later he was also honored with induction into the IIHF Hall of Fame.

Internationally

For Finland, Valtonen took part in the World Championships in 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977 and 1979. He was able to convince especially in the 1972 World Cup, when he was voted the best goalkeeper of the tournament.

In addition, he was in the squad of his country at the Olympic Winter Games in 1972 in Sapporo, 1980 in Lake Placid and in Sarajevo in 1984 and 1976 at the Canada Cup.
