José de Almada Negreiros

José Sobral de Almada Negreiros ( born April 7, 1893 São Tomé, † June 15, 1970 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese universal artist who was primarily as a painter one of the foremost Portuguese artists of the 20th century. He was also active as a writer.

Life

José Sobral de Almada Negreiros was one of the founders of the magazine Orpheu. A long friendship connected him with the poet Fernando Pessoa. From Almada Negreiros also an important portrait of Pessoa comes. In 1919 he traveled to Paris in 1920 and returned back again. From 1927 to 1931 he lived in Madrid. He received the 1942 Premio Columbano, 1946, the Premio Domingos Sequeira. His work had a great influence on the Portuguese art of the next generations. He was an important representative of the modern art of Portugal. With the painter Sarah Afonso he was married for several years. Almada Negreiros died on 15 June 1970 in Lisbon.

Work as a universal artist

He has worked in a wide variety of artistic fields: as a novelist, painter, cartoonist, illustrator, poet, essayist, dancer, stage and costume designer, illustrator, playwright. He has fitted in Spain and Portugal, many public buildings with his works, such as the Lisbon Café A Brasileira ( most significant Cafe Portugal ) 1925, the glass work on the Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Fátima or murals in various public buildings in Madrid. But even corporate offices, ferry terminals or the Literary Institute of the University of Lisbon. Even as an actor in the film, he was seen, probably one of his few appearances on celluloid ever: In 1920, he starred in the silent film " O conde nando " ( The Condemned ) one of the main roles.
