José Gabriel Funes

José Gabriel Funes, SJ ( born January 31, 1963 in Córdoba ) is an Argentine Jesuit and astronomer. He is the current director of the Vatican Observatory.

Life

His master's degree in astronomy, he graduated from the National University of Córdoba in Argentina and completed his habilitation at the University of Padua in Italy to the doctor. In addition, he has each completed a bachelor's degree in philosophy at the University del Salvador in Argentina and in theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He was ordained a priest in 1995. As a researcher, he came in 2000 to the Vatican Observatory and was appointed on August 19, 2006 as the successor of the former director George Coyne.
