José María Montealegre

José María Montealegre Fernández ( born March 19, 1815 in San José, Costa Rica; † September 26, 1887 in San Jose (California ), USA ) was from August 14, 1859 to May 8, 1863 President of Costa Rica.

Life

It was the first son of Gerónima Fernández Chacón and Mariano Montealegre Bustamante. His father was employed in the Factoría de Tabaco. The family belonged to the bourgeoisie, which ejidos appropriated.

He married for the first time in April 1840 in San José, Ana María Mora Porras ( 1819-1854 ), sister of José Miguel Mora Porras and Juan Rafael Mora Porras. In marriage Montealegre Mora 13 children were born:

He studied at Lauderdale House [ wp 3] in London and graduated in 1837 from the University of Aberdeen, as a surgeon from

Between 1820 and 1830 he was a partner of James Gerard and Richard Trevithick of mines in the Monte del Aguacate. Between 1830 and 1850, was devoted to the cultivation and export of coffee, a pharmacy led.

On June 25, 1863, he participated with a million pesos to the founding of the Banco Anglo Costarricense -, other owners were Edward W. Allpress and Allan Wallis, the British Consul in San Jose. She opened her business premises for customer traffic on 1 July 1864. She was from 1864 to 1884 and from 1902 to 1917 a Geldemittierendes Institute. The bills printed Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. [ wp 4] In 1994, she went bankrupt. He was the first surgeon who used chloroform in Costa Rica. During the cholera epidemic in 1856 he performed in San Jose help. He sat in front of the medical objects representing Costa Rica.

Presidency 1859-1863

He settled in a military coup to power achievement. Convened a constituent assembly, which emitted the liberal constitution of 1859. In his Cabinet were José María Castro Madriz, Jesús Jiménez Zamora, Julián Volio Llorente, Aniceto Esquivel Sáenz, Juan José Ulloa and Vicente Aguilar Solares Cubero [ wp 5]. In the April 1860 presidential elections were the opposition candidate, Manuel Mora Fernández. Many war bonds were redeemed from the war against the Filibusteropiraten under William Walker ( mercenaries ).

In his Cabinet were: Francisco María Iglesias Llorente [ wp 6], Aniceto Esquivel Sáenz, Vicente Aguilar Cubero and Francisco Montealegre Fernández [ wp 7]. In 1862 he sent capitán José Antonio Angulo to Talamanca [ wp 8]

After his presidency, he was Member of Parliament for San José (Costa Rica) and a member of the Constituent Assembly in 1869. Tomás Guardia Gutiérrez Under the government in 1872 he went into exile in California.
